Nicknamed “the gentle giants” of the cat world, they are known for their chirping, and trilling. These two sounds are something like a cross between a meow and a purr.
They sit at the top of the friendliness cat breed list. Although large in size, there is nothing to fear about this sweet-natured breed, which makes it a perfect addition to families, including those with small children and other pets. The average male Maine Coon weighs between and 15 and 25 pounds, while female Maine Coons weigh about 10% less than males – around 10 – 15 lbs. They can reach lengths up to 48 inches, including their tale. While most cats take a year to mature, Maine Coons do not reach their full size until they are four or five years old.
Super intelligent they are easily trainable with almost “dog like” personalities. They can be trained to walk outdoors on a leash or even play a game of fetch.
Most cats have 18 toes, 5 on their front paws and 4 on their back ones. Some cats have an extra digit or two. They are known as polydactyl cats. Most believe this provides them with better balance and agility. If you’ve ever met a polydactyl cat, you’ll probably agree they are really adorable. We currently have two polydactyl teenagers, one female and on male for future breeding.
European Main Coon vs American Main Coon
European Maine Coons have larger ears with prominent tufts, longer bushier tails and higher cheekbones. American Maine Coons have softer, milder features that better resemble the average house cat. American Maine Coons have oblique shaped eyes, while European cats have almond shaped ones.
